The stories adapted from European folktales often feature a desire for riches, status, and romance. In comparison, Indigenous stories highlight relations to other beings. In accordance with the Indigenous imperative to see the land, animals, and other living beings represented, Julie Buffalohead’s work exhibits a rematriated approach to storytelling, grounded in Indigenous values and depicting love for beings beyond oneself.

A citizen of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, Julie Buffalohead (b. 1972) creates visual narratives that center Native storytelling. Stories of Becoming features a new series by Buffalohead that incorporates animals of Indigenous stories alongside the often contradictory stories from European folklore to reenvision the teachings imposed on youth and within our communities. Alongside these visual stories, Buffalohead engages with images of contemporary femininity and youth, representing traditional and modern protectors and leaders.

As parents alter and update the stories passed on to children, Buffalohead recenters the stories Indigenous communities need to hold onto—the ones that tell of the spirits and safeguards still present within contemporary life, the ones that serve as reminders to care for community, and the stories of pain that established Indigenous histories of resiliency. Within Stories of Becoming, Buffalohead grounds her depictions in space and a more defined landscape, materializing the reality, authenticity, and validity of Indigenous stories while still leaving room for humor.

Buffalohead received her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minneapolis, MN and her MFA from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. She has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, and Guggenheim Fellowship.

Overland Park’s Music in the Park summer concert series is a cornerstone of the community’s seasonal festivities, held at the modern Thompson Park stage in the heart of the historic downtown Overland Park area. Running on select Thursday evenings throughout June, July, and August, the series showcases a high-energy rotation of Kansas City’s favorite local bands, spanning genres from soulful jazz and big band to high-energy pop and classic rock. The event is intentionally designed to be accessible and communal; there is no admission fee, and the park’s open lawn provides the perfect setting for attendees to spread out with blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics while enjoying a professional-grade sound experience under the sunset. What truly sets this series apart is the energetic atmosphere that begins well before the first note. In the hours leading up to the 7:00 PM showtime, the area often buzzes with additional festivities such as local car shows and yard games. The park’s amenities—including a splash pad for children, a playground, and nearby local breweries and eateries—make it easy for families and friends to turn a simple concert into a full evening of exploration. Ad Astra Duo presents Night Music, an intimate evening of chamber music featuring works by Leonard Bernstein, Germaine Tailleferre, Caroline Shaw, and Jennifer Higdon. Joined by guest artists Michael MacLaughlin, violin, and Kathryn Hilger, viola, the program moves from the emotional depth of Bernstein’s Three Meditations from Mass to the sparkling elegance of Tailleferre’s Piano Trio, the imaginative textures of Shaw’s Thousandth Orange, and the luminous beauty of Higdon’s Nocturne from String Poetic. Night Music offers audiences a richly atmospheric summer concert filled with lyricism, color, and expressive storytelling.

The Overland Park Civic Band Summer Concert Series is a cherished community tradition that has brought live music to Johnson County since 1938. This 60-member ensemble, composed of both amateur and professional musicians from across the Kansas City area, performs a diverse repertoire ranging from stirring patriotic marches and classical masterpieces to contemporary hits and Broadway scores. The series is designed to be highly accessible, offering free, family-friendly entertainment that invites residents to connect through the shared experience of open-air music. For the 2026 season, concerts are held on consecutive Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM throughout June and early July.

The performances will take place at Thompson Park in Downtown Overland Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks to settle in for an hour of performance. To ensure the music continues regardless of the weather, the band schedules "rain dates" for the following Monday evenings, with updates shared via their social media channels.

The Sunflower Ragtime Orchestra presents "King of Ragtime -- The Music of Scott Joplin," on Thursday, July 16, 2026, 7 pm, at Grace United Methodist Church, 11485 S. Ridgeview Rd., Olathe, KS. Admission is free. The concert features the music of Scott Joplin, widely regarded as the greatest ragtime composer of all time.

Celebrate the Lenexa Community Orchestra’s 10th season with a welcoming, relaxed concert.

Made up of volunteer musicians, the orchestra has been performing free summer concerts since 2017 under the direction of Conductor Richard Ryan.

The concerts are free, family-friendly and designed to be approachable.

New this year:

Each concert will feature an original piece composed by a member of the orchestra.

At the July 18 concert Mayor Julie Sayers will also guest conduct “Stars and Stripes Forever” and Councilman Bill Nicks narrate “The Lincoln Portrait.”

Come write with Writers in Residence! We are a Roaming Free writers group that pops up around the KC Metro to meet writers in their own neighborhoods. On fourth Friday's we take up residence in InterUrban ArtHouse for a three hour write in, help support writers with encouragement, advise, and support.

The Giggle Time Children’s Program is a beloved community tradition in Overland Park designed to get toddlers and young children moving, laughing, and learning. The program hosts a diverse rotation of high-energy performers including popular regional musicians like Mr. Stinky Feet, the StoneLion Puppet Theatre, and various storytellers and magicians. Each session is built around the "giggle and wiggle" philosophy, encouraging active participation from the kids rather than just passive listening. Because the program is free and requires no pre-registration, it serves as a flexible, low-pressure outing for parents and caregivers. The venue shifts with the seasons to take advantage of the weather: events are typically held indoors at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center during the cooler months and move outdoors to Roe Park in June and August. It’s a great way for local families to connect while introducing children to the performing arts in a fun, accessible environment.

At the core of The Swallowtails, you will find two musicians magnetized by a curiosity to connect and be understood. The genre-bending exploration between Miki P (guitar and vocals) and Rachel Lovelace (bassoon and vocals) has established the band as a premier act in Kansas City and naturally grown a large and loyal following as people connect with both the music and the musicians. The band’s sound is heavily influenced by rock, folk, pop, and classical music.

The concert opens with one of the Baroque's most dazzling showpieces: Corelli/Geminiani's La Folia, a set of variations that has captivated audiences for centuries, its theme endlessly inventive and full of fire. Telemann's brooding, atmospheric Concerto for Bass Viola da Gamba follows, with guest soloist Tess Roberts who returns bringing a rare and luminous voice to this seldom-heard gem.

KC's own Trevor Stewart is featured in Vivaldi's Recorder Concerto in C Major — a KC native and ensemble favorite equally at home on recorder, chalumeau, as clarinet, And the evening reaches its radiant finale with Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins — four soloists blazing together with the full KC Baroque ensemble in a perfect last flourish of the summer sky.

Katy Guillen & The Drive’s sophomore album Make That Sound has been making big waves in the indie music scene since its release last fall. Glide Magazine describes it as “a relentless rock vibe, combining Wet Leg’s modern edge and Courtney Barnett’s knack for guitar-based hooks,” and Rainbow Rodeo declared, “It’s raw, it's tight, and it's utterly compelling.” The last half of 2025 saw the band touring relentlessly on the new record with dates across the Midwest and Northeast, as well as a tour down the West Coast supporting British guitar legend Robin Trower. This year the band will take the new album to more cities across the country, including a tour through Alaska.
