The stories adapted from European folktales often feature a desire for riches, status, and romance. In comparison, Indigenous stories highlight relations to other beings. In accordance with the Indigenous imperative to see the land, animals, and other living beings represented, Julie Buffalohead’s work exhibits a rematriated approach to storytelling, grounded in Indigenous values and depicting love for beings beyond oneself.

A citizen of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, Julie Buffalohead (b. 1972) creates visual narratives that center Native storytelling. Stories of Becoming features a new series by Buffalohead that incorporates animals of Indigenous stories alongside the often contradictory stories from European folklore to reenvision the teachings imposed on youth and within our communities. Alongside these visual stories, Buffalohead engages with images of contemporary femininity and youth, representing traditional and modern protectors and leaders.

As parents alter and update the stories passed on to children, Buffalohead recenters the stories Indigenous communities need to hold onto—the ones that tell of the spirits and safeguards still present within contemporary life, the ones that serve as reminders to care for community, and the stories of pain that established Indigenous histories of resiliency. Within Stories of Becoming, Buffalohead grounds her depictions in space and a more defined landscape, materializing the reality, authenticity, and validity of Indigenous stories while still leaving room for humor.

Buffalohead received her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minneapolis, MN and her MFA from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. She has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, and Guggenheim Fellowship.

Co-directed by the Wyandot Nation of Kansas and Monumenta, in collaboration with lead artists Omakyehstih Collective, Trespassers Beware! Fort Conley and Wyandot Women Warriors is a mobile monument that illuminates the story of the Wyandot Conley sisters who occupied their family's cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas to save it from urban development. While physically defending the burials, Lyda Conley took their fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and became the first Indigenous woman to argue a case before the highest court in the land. The monument reimagines Fort Conley, the small dwelling the sisters built inside the Wyandot National Burying Ground and inhabited for years to defend their family’s graves. Their decades-long activism and legal arguments protected this sacred land, impacting preservation and tribal sovereignty movements.

This multimedia installation is based on a replica of the historic fort and incorporates video, music, writing, interpretation, oral histories, an original performance, and more to share the story.

Come write with Writers in Residence! We are a Roaming Free writers group that pops up around the KC Metro to meet writers in their own neighborhoods. On fourth Friday's we take up residence in InterUrban ArtHouse for a three hour write in, help support writers with encouragement, advise, and support.

Families, friends, and music enthusiasts will gather on blankets and lawn chairs, creating a communal spirit that embodies the heart of the Overland Park community.

This Memorial Weekend, Te Deum presents a concert of reflection and solace, featuring Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell and Herbert Howells’ Requiem, alongside De Profundis and a world premiere of In Paradisum by our composer-in-residence, Dr. Keane Southard. Written in response to personal loss and the devastating toll of war, these works offer a universal message of comfort in times of adversity. Parry’s and Howells’ compositions reflect the grief of their era, from the battlefield losses of World War I to the personal tragedy of Howells’ son. This program honors the resilience of the human spirit and provides a space for remembrance and healing.

This free, fun-filled evening starting at 5 PM! Enjoy family-friendly activities, including a mega obstacle course bounce house, splash pad, face painting, balloon art, lawn games, and more. Food & drink will be available for purchase from Mad Greek, Omnivorium, Uce Kitchen, The Rub BBQ, Disco Gelato, Tall Trellis, and KC Cocktail Company. At 6 PM, the excitement continues with a high-energy Dueling Pianos show by HIFI Productions where your song requests take center stage! The Giggle Time Children’s Program is a beloved community tradition in Overland Park designed to get toddlers and young children moving, laughing, and learning. The program hosts a diverse rotation of high-energy performers including popular regional musicians like Mr. Stinky Feet, the StoneLion Puppet Theatre, and various storytellers and magicians. Each session is built around the "giggle and wiggle" philosophy, encouraging active participation from the kids rather than just passive listening. Because the program is free and requires no pre-registration, it serves as a flexible, low-pressure outing for parents and caregivers. The venue shifts with the seasons to take advantage of the weather: events are typically held indoors at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center during the cooler months and move outdoors to Roe Park in June and August. It’s a great way for local families to connect while introducing children to the performing arts in a fun, accessible environment.

The Overland Park Civic Band Summer Concert Series is a cherished community tradition that has brought live music to Johnson County since 1938. This 60-member ensemble, composed of both amateur and professional musicians from across the Kansas City area, performs a diverse repertoire ranging from stirring patriotic marches and classical masterpieces to contemporary hits and Broadway scores. The series is designed to be highly accessible, offering free, family-friendly entertainment that invites residents to connect through the shared experience of open-air music. For the 2026 season, concerts are held on consecutive Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM throughout June and early July. Most performances take place at the Indian Creek Recreation Center Pavilion, while the final concerts of the season typically move to Thompson Park in Downtown Overland Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks to settle in for an hour of performance. To ensure the music continues regardless of the weather, the band schedules "rain dates" for the following Monday evenings, with updates shared via their social media channels.

Overland Park’s Music in the Park summer concert series is a cornerstone of the community’s seasonal festivities, held at the modern Thompson Park stage in the heart of the historic downtown Overland Park area. Running on select Thursday evenings throughout June, July, and August, the series showcases a high-energy rotation of Kansas City’s favorite local bands, spanning genres from soulful jazz and big band to high-energy pop and classic rock. The event is intentionally designed to be accessible and communal; there is no admission fee, and the park’s open lawn provides the perfect setting for attendees to spread out with blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics while enjoying a professional-grade sound experience under the sunset.

What truly sets this series apart is the energetic atmosphere that begins well before the first note. In the hours leading up to the 7:00 PM showtime, the area often buzzes with additional festivities such as local car shows and yard games. The park’s amenities—including a splash pad for children, a playground, and nearby local breweries and eateries—make it easy for families and friends to turn a simple concert into a full evening of exploration. It’s an authentic slice of Overland Park life where the historic charm of the Strang Carriage House meets a vibrant, modern social scene.
