American fashion designer Jeremy Scott (b. 1975, Kansas City, Missouri) and contemporary artist Katherine Bernhardt (b. 1975, St. Louis, Missouri) are both known for their creative work that engages with themes of consumer and popular culture and irreverent humor. This exhibition presents looks by Scott and paintings by Bernhardt, creating a dynamic pop culture extravaganza. They are two elite artists working in disparate mediums who transform the mundane into the spectacular.

The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art is proud to present the first exhibition to explore the shared references that unites Bernhardt’s paintings and Scott’s iconic fashion looks. Bernhardt is known for her colorful, energetic canvases that juxtapose symbols of everyday life, such as Windex, the golden arches of McDonalds, and Lucky Charms cereal, with imagery sourced from pop culture, such as the Simpsons characters, E.T., and the Pink Panther. The symbols are repeated as motifs, resulting in patterned paintings that elevate kitsch into high art. Scott’s fashion designs, created for the Italian design house Moschino (2013-2023), adidas, and for his namesake brand, Jeremy Scott, adapt pop culture iconography into haute couture. His designs have been worn by celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Rihanna, all of whom understand and appreciate his cheeky humor and of-the-moment references. Scott is also the subject of a 2015 documentary by Vlad Yudin, titled “Jeremy Scott: The People’s Designer,” which features cameos from many of his pop star friends.

At the heart of Bernhardt’s and Scott’s work are questions such as: who determines what is high or low art? What happens when ubiquitous consumer products are re-branded into art and fashion? Are they examples of sophisticated satire, or a more dramatic upending of bourgeois standards of decorum and beauty?

A Match Made in Heaven provides an opportunity for JCCC students in the Fashion Design & Merchandising and Fine Arts programs, as well as residents of Johnson County and the greater Kansas City region to study the contributions of these two masters from the Midwest.

“Trailblazing Women of Country,” featuring Rissi Palmer and Kristina Train with a five-member all-female band, will entertain and inspire. With their chart-topping hits and record-breaking sales, Cline, Lynn, and Parton wove threads of contemporary womanhood throughout the tapestry of country music, resulting in unprecedented commercial success and earning each a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Cline’s assured contralto affirms that a woman can be heartbroken and sure of herself at the same time (“Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight”); Lynn’s songs exalt autonomy attained through contraception (“The Pill”) and self-respect (“Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ with Lovin’ On Your Mind”); and Parton demonstrates that a woman can ascend the career ladder (“9-to-5”) while never losing sight of her roots (“Coat of Many Colors”). Through their singular voices and artistry, Cline, Lynn, and Parton defied restrictive gender norms, proving that women can be at once beautiful and strong, vulnerable and powerful.

Barnaby Bright is an alt-Americana trio with contemporary influences that reflect their geographical journey from Brooklyn to Nashville to Kansas, while calling on Nathan’s Oklahoma roots and distant relation to Merle Haggard. The band has a dedicated following that feeds on their ability to spin storytelling into sonic treasures: a BB show takes audiences on a ride through love songs, murder ballads, and deeply-moving, relatable themes. The mostly commonly uttered phrase at the end of a show seems to be, “that was a spiritual experience.”**The Swallowtails open.

A genre-bending acoustic duo that fuses rock, pop, and folk genres by-way of their unique instrumentation, The Swallowtails feature Miki P on acoustic guitar/vocals and Rachel Lovelace on bassoon/vocals. The songwriting duo won 2024 “Best Local Band” in the Kansas City magazine The Pitch. ABOUT US: The Green Guitar Folk House music series features nationally touring singer-songwriters. Tix can be reserved in advance via the Green Guitar Folk House website or purchased at the door. To reserve tickets, complete the form at: https://greenguitarfolk.org/tickets --> $25 in advance with reservation • $27 at the door. • $5 for students with ID. • (Free for 12th grade and under

Magpie Creative Reuse Collective is proud to present the first annual Moth Ball, a creative reuse costume ball.  Join us for a fun evening of story book forest floor ambiance, handmade costumes and accessories, reuse artist demonstrations, raffle prizes, and more.  What better way to kick off earth month than by supporting Magpie Creative Reuse.

For the past year, Magpie Creative Reuse Collective has been diligently working to serve the Kansas City community as we build this non-profit.  Our goal for 2025 is to move our creative reuse shop into our own store front.  Your support of this fundraiser event will move us toward that goal.  In our own location, we will be able to expand our inventory of used creative supplies, expand our shopping hours to make accessible used supplies more readily available, and offer more classes for skills and processes needed to reuse, upcycle, downcycle, recycle, and repair.

Join the party. Join the mischief!
