The stories adapted from European folktales often feature a desire for riches, status, and romance. In comparison, Indigenous stories highlight relations to other beings. In accordance with the Indigenous imperative to see the land, animals, and other living beings represented, Julie Buffalohead’s work exhibits a rematriated approach to storytelling, grounded in Indigenous values and depicting love for beings beyond oneself.

A citizen of the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma, Julie Buffalohead (b. 1972) creates visual narratives that center Native storytelling. Stories of Becoming features a new series by Buffalohead that incorporates animals of Indigenous stories alongside the often contradictory stories from European folklore to reenvision the teachings imposed on youth and within our communities. Alongside these visual stories, Buffalohead engages with images of contemporary femininity and youth, representing traditional and modern protectors and leaders.

As parents alter and update the stories passed on to children, Buffalohead recenters the stories Indigenous communities need to hold onto—the ones that tell of the spirits and safeguards still present within contemporary life, the ones that serve as reminders to care for community, and the stories of pain that established Indigenous histories of resiliency. Within Stories of Becoming, Buffalohead grounds her depictions in space and a more defined landscape, materializing the reality, authenticity, and validity of Indigenous stories while still leaving room for humor.

Buffalohead received her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minneapolis, MN and her MFA from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. She has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, and Guggenheim Fellowship.

Overland Park’s Music in the Park summer concert series is a cornerstone of the community’s seasonal festivities, held at the modern Thompson Park stage in the heart of the historic downtown Overland Park area. Running on select Thursday evenings throughout June, July, and August, the series showcases a high-energy rotation of Kansas City’s favorite local bands, spanning genres from soulful jazz and big band to high-energy pop and classic rock. The event is intentionally designed to be accessible and communal; there is no admission fee, and the park’s open lawn provides the perfect setting for attendees to spread out with blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics while enjoying a professional-grade sound experience under the sunset. What truly sets this series apart is the energetic atmosphere that begins well before the first note. In the hours leading up to the 7:00 PM showtime, the area often buzzes with additional festivities such as local car shows and yard games. The park’s amenities—including a splash pad for children, a playground, and nearby local breweries and eateries—make it easy for families and friends to turn a simple concert into a full evening of exploration. It’s an authentic slice of Overland Park life where the historic charm of the Strang Carriage House meets a vibrant, modern social scene.

Courtyard Shakespeare presents As You Like It at Heritage Park Shelter 9 in Overland Park. Three nights of free outdoor Shakespeare for all of Kansas City.

This modern adaptation sets the play in a summer camp. The court scenes unfold in the world of Duke Prep, rigid and formal and ruled by fear. Then the characters escape to the Forest of Arden: loose, alive, and free in every sense of the word. A scene transition is timed to actual sunset at Heritage Park.

The production features original live acoustic music performed throughout, original costume design, and a cast of 25 performers. Courtyard Shakespeare is an educational theatre company, bringing together high school students, college students, and professional Kansas City actors to create work side by side. That collaboration between emerging and experienced artists is central to everything the company does.

Courtyard Shakespeare was founded in 2018 by drama teacher Dan C. Schmidt, who believed theatre should be free and available to everyone. After Dan's passing, his students and colleagues carried his vision forward. This June marks the company's sixth production since then. The show is funded through a suggested donation model and an annual GoFundMe so that admission never has to be charged.

No tickets. No reservations. Bring a lawn chair, low or high, as well as, food and drinks!

In a world full of imitators and social media facades, BELLES (Kelli Belles) stands out as an artist unapologetically true to herself. Based in Nashville, her voice is as striking as her presence—effortlessly blending a dreamy, modern edge with the timeless soul of country music’s golden era. Known for her electric live performances and vivid storytelling, BELLES crafts songs packed with raw emotion and imagery that feels pulled straight from real life.

Hailing from Omaha, NE, BELLES brings a Midwest grit and authenticity to everything she does, balancing small-town roots with big-stage ambition. Her journey has taken her from sharing the stage with artists like Miranda Lambert to headlining her own cross-country ‘Trust Issues Tour’ in 2024, captivating audiences from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.

Drawing inspiration from legends like Loretta Lynn and June Carter Cash, BELLES reimagines the classic country sound for today’s world. With tracks like *Porcelain* and *Ring On The Table*, she invites listeners into a world where vintage charm collides with modern, dreamy vocals—fusing the spirit of Music Row with the heart of East Nashville. BELLES isn’t just making music; she’s creating an experience that feels like a bridge between the Grand Ole Opry and the vibrant, boundary-pushing future of country. With special guest Kris Schultz opening. This is an all ages show!
