When did you participate in the Shooting Stars program?

In 2018, I participated in the Shooting Stars program and won in the category of Production and Design. It was a year with a lot of talented artists, and I felt so lucky to be included among them

How did you utilize your Shooting Stars scholarship?

The scholarship money went toward my freshman year studying graphic design at Iowa State University.

What type of fine/performing/visual art were you passionate about then and do you still pursue that art today?

Throughout high school, I channeled my creativity into theatrical production and design, specifically managing the Props department. This helped me discover and develop that artistic side of myself, which led me to major in graphic design. While I no longer work in technical theatre, I still love to watch plays and musicals (and pay very close attention to the props and set design)! A lot of the creative problem solving and technical craft from creating props translated directly into my college courses, and those skills are still a big part of my unique design perspective.

What has been happening in your life since you participated in the Shooting Stars program?

I moved to Ames, Iowa to study graphic design at Iowa State. I’ll graduate in spring 2022, and I’ve never felt more artistically fulfilled!

How has the Shooting Stars program helped you to become a better artist?

Beyond the experience of building my first portfolio and learning to present my work to industry professionals, it was a great opportunity to reflect on my progress and achievements as an artist. I had always considered myself a creative person, but the recognition and validation that came from being nominated for (and winning!) a Shooting Star award gave me the confidence I needed to take the leap into pursuing a career in the design industry. I’ll always be grateful to Mark Swezey, my high school director, for nominating me and having that belief in me as an artist.
